Frequently asked questions and answers
Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg does not contain any preservatives. As a consequence the liquid paint is susceptible to fungi, especially on warmer days and when stored in an open bucket.
For this reason you should only mix the amount of paint that you can apply in one day.
But: Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg (in the powder form) can be stored for many years without risk of fungi nor loss of quality!
Once Glor-Isol rödfärg has been applied, the components start to penetrate the wood. Under the influence of UV light (sunlight), the iron sulphate component of the slurry paint (which facilitates the penetration of the pigment into the wood) turns the wood greyish (this process can take a few months depending on the weather). During the first few months, the linseed oil binder also darkens slightly. This is common to all sludge paints that contain iron sulphate and have linseed oil as a binder.
As a result, the appearance of freshly applied Glor-Isol rödfärg (especially a first coat on previously unpainted wood!) will be lighter compared to the colour after a few months. After this initial darkening, the colour of Glor-Isol rödfärg remains more constant than other well-known brands.
Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg includes a thickening component. While the slamfärg is not applied this can look a bit flakey in the bucket and on the brush.
This has no negative effect on the application (in fact it facilitates to use a brush).
Do consider to use a specific "slamfärg pensel" or "rödfärg pensel". These brushes have stiff bristles that make it easier to brush the paint "into the wood".
When brush painting you will notice that once the slamfärg is applied to the wood the 'flakes' dissolve completely.
For both application types (brush or spray) you use the same Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg.
Depending on the application type, you just add a different amount of water and emulsified linseed oil to mix with Glor-Isol Torrslamärg.
- For brush painting you need about 3,5L water and 0,45L emulsified linseed oil per kg Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg.
- For spray painting you need about 6L water and 0,7L emulsified linseed oil per kg Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg
The easiest way to learn the correct amounts of water, linseed oil and soap to mix with Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg for your application is to use our Glor-Isol Quantity Calculator
Because of its great characteristics and the ecological friendliness the actual binder in Glor-Isol rödfärg / slamfärg is boiled linseed oil.
The solvent in Glor-Isol rödfärg / slamfärg is water.
If you ever tried to mix oil with water you will have experience that that does not work. The oil does not mix and simply floats on the water.
To solve this, you will have to apply some liquid soap (ideally old-school so-called "green", "brown" or "gold" soap). As a guideline you need to add 10% of soap based on the volume of linseed oil.
The mixture of boiled linseed oil and liquid soap is called "emulsified linseed oil".
Because over time the quality of the mixture soap and linseed oil degrades, we sell our emulsified linseed oil as a 5L canister of boiled linseed oil together with a separate 0,5L bottle of liquid soap.
If you ever experience that your Glor-Isol rödfärg / slamfärg does not mix into a homogeneous liquid, you probably forgot to add the soap. The solution in that case is simple: just add the appropriated volume of soap to the mixture.
If you use a different type of soap as we sell, you might need to adjust the amount a bit. This is perfectly ok as long as the oil mixes with the rest of the mixture.
You do not need to use the linseed oil and soap we sell (Note that we do have competitive prices!)
It is important however that you use boiled linseed oil (there is also 'raw linseed oil' on the market, but that will take much longer to dry and as a consequence will not get you a good paint result)
As for the soap the requirements are easier. We experiences best results with old school "green" / "brown" / "gold" soap, but we have seem pretty good results with dishwashing soap as well. Note that when using a different type of soap as we sell, you might need to adapt the quantity of soap. The sole purpose of adding soap into the mixture is to enable the linseed oil to mix with the water.
There are many good paint sprayers for sale.
If you need to buy a paint sprayer, keep in mind that it:
- Can suck up thick liquids from a bucket: Many paint sprayers only have a 1L cup to hold paint. Using such a sprayer will be cumbersome to paint large areas. If you use a paint sprayer that can suck up paint from a bucket you don´t have refill the paint sprayer when applying the paint.
- Is easy to clean (e.g. that it has a self-cleaning program): A paint sprayer is a complex and costly device. If you do not clean it thoroughly after use, it's lifetime will be limited.
We have had very good results with the Wagner Flexio W950 paint sprayer. The W950 is able to suck up the slamfärg from a bucket, it has an adjustable nozzle on a long lance and it has a self cleaning program.
We clean our W950 by letting the self cleaning program rise the machine with 2 to 3 buckets of lukewarm water with liquid soap until there is no pigment in the hoses anymore. Afterwards, we clean every single part of the nozzle with liquid soap until all paint is gone.
Many paints are not environmentally friendly.
But there are types of paint that are less harmful to the environment than others.
As "rödfärg" and "slamfärg" are traditionally manufactured from waste material from mining, environmentally harmful and even poisonous elements of the mining waste material were part of rödfärg and slamfärg. In many cases rödfärg and slamfärg contain lead (Pb) and zinc oxides as well as other substances in small amounts. As a consequence these paints are harmful to aquatic organisms and may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment. On top of that the one should avoid direct contact with those products to avoid allergic reactions. If you really want to keep your dearest safe don't use these paints!
Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg is different.
The pigment used in Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg is artificial and made according to very strict (EU) environmental preservation rules. As a result Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg does not contain any of the harmful elements described above.
Compared to generic ready-to-use rödfärg / slamfärg, Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg differentiates even more. Of every liter of paint, the dry ingredients (which factually IS torrslamfärg) only account for 14 to 25% of the weight of the paint. That means that much less energy is required for e.g. transportation compared to ready to use paints.
And last but not least is the fact that because of the long shelf time (many years without quality degrading) and because one only needs to mix the amount of rödfärg / slamfärg needed for the job, an enormous amount of waste is prevented.
In the sludge paint you mix with Glor-Isol Torrslamfärg linseed oil is used as a binder. The binder increases the longevity of the paint once applied to wood and it prevents that the colour comes off easy (which is common with many other types of sludgepaint).
It is your choice if you do not want to use the linseed oil binder, but keep in mind the drawbacks of doing so:
- Lesser longevity
- Colour coming off more easy
In general sludge paint is to be applied to unplaned wood only.
If the unplaned wood has been painted before, it depends on the type of paint that was used if / when you can succesfully apply sludge paint to it.
- If a sludge paint (even from a different brand) was applied before, you can apply a new layer of sludge paint according to your needs.
- If wood stain was applied before you can only apply sludge paint once the stain has worn out. This could take easily 8 to 10 yrs.
- If an iron sulphate grey-wash was applied before, you can apply sludge paint as if the wood was unpainted.
- If an oil based paint was applied before we recommend to NOT apply sludge paint at all. This account for linseed oil, alkyd and alcrylic based paints.
Yes you can, as long as you keep a few things in mind:
The timber has been impregnated under high pressure to ensure the impregnating liquid gets deep into the wood. The consequence is that newly bought pressure impregnated timber is too wet to paint. You have to waint until the surface moisture content is below 15%. Typically this level is only reached after a full summer so you should be safe to paint pressure impregnated timber the year after you have bought it.
In addition, pressure impregnated timber is usually planed, which is far from ideal to apply sludge paint. Keep in mind that because of the planing, the sludge paint will adhere more difficult to the timber and that the final look will be different from that of unplaned timber.
